July 10, 2016 Sunset in Black and White Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, February 4, 2014 168 It seems at first thought to be silly to take a photo of a sunset in black and white. In these 2 pictures a comparison of the same photo is shown in black and white and in original colour. The black and white photo to me accentuates the structure of the cloud formations and seems to enhance the brightness of the sun as it shines up from the horizon. Of course in today's world of nature photography colour remains king. What do you think? -700 900-1600

July 9, 2016 Magnificent Roots Jon Van Loon Sarasota, FL, February 4, 2015 1352 This is a type of fiscus tree, common in the tropics and subtropics. A careful look shows spots of bright colour on the root surface. I presume these to be a species of lichen. -400 1200-1600

July 4, 2016 Camouflaged Jon Van Loon Sarasota, FL, February 12, 2015 296 Anhingas often called Snake Birds have no oil on their feathers to repel water naturally. Thus they must spread their wings to the sun to dry their flight feathers. This Anhinga lies almost camouflaged on the surface of mangroves to let the water dry off in safety. -400 1200-1600

June 10, 2016 Proto-Conch Chowder Jon Van Loon Longboat Key, FL, October 10, 2012 332 This live conch rolled onto a beach after a storm. Before it could fully retract into it's shell I was able to obtain this Photo of it's intensively red flesh. Rather than being a candidate for conch chowder, by law it had to be released back into the sea as do all living shellfish found on the beach in this area. -400 1200-1600

June 2, 2016 Sunshine Skyway Bridge and ghostly Tampa Skyline Jon Van Loon Bradenton, FL, February 12, 2014 2915 This Photo taken from the Robinson Preserve in Bradendon Florida shows an appreciable section of the worlds longest concrete cable stayed bridge the Sunshine Skyway. This bridge spanning Tampa Bay from Bradenton to St Petersburg Fl is roughly 8 km long. It's striking pylons-cable slung central section, clearly visible in this photo, is it's dominant feature. A section the of Tampa skyline appears to be sinking into the sea in the background. In a darker vein 1 to 15 jumper suicides are recorded on the bridge each year -912 2736-3648

May 19, 2016 Reflections Jon Van Loon Sarasota, FL, February 17, 2016 588 This photo was taken of a Koi pond in a botanical garden. The dense low over hanging leaves of a variety of vegetation are reflected in the water. These natural but unusual reflection patterns resulted due to the disturbance of the surface water by the fast swimming fish. -912 2736-3648
